Allambie Heights is a suburb of northern Sydney located in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 17.5 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district and falls under the jurisdiction of the Northern Beaches Council for the purposes of local government. It is located in the Northern Beaches region of the state.
The word “calm spot” comes from the Aboriginal language and culture. In 1918, an estate with the same name was broken up and put up for auction. It is quite possible that Aboriginal people used a “goat trail” that closely parallels the actual Allambie Road today in order to gain access to the ocean beaches located in the nearby town of Manly. The late 1940s and early 1950s saw the development of the suburban area. The Allambie Heights Post Office first opened its doors on February 1, 1961.
Many of the streets in Allambie Heights were named after famous allied political figures of World War II as well as important battles, notably those in which Australian troops played a significant role. Moresby Place, Owen Stanley Avenue, Wewak Place, Kirra Road, Libya Crescent, Derna Crescent, Tobruk Avenue, Anzio Avenue, Roosevelt Avenue, and Churchill Crescent are some of the streets that fall under this category. It’s possible that Darmour Avenue was misspelt, but most likely it was named after the Battle of Damour.
In addition to a primary school, a community centre, a delicatessen, a newsagent, a bakery, and an IGA supermarket can be found in the core commercial district of Allambie Heights. In addition, the Warringah Aquatic Centre may be found here. A number of retirement communities, such as the German Lutheran Homes and the Italian Scalabrini Village, may be found in this suburban area as well. A number of care facilities for people with disabilities are also available, such as the Allambie Special School, the Sunnyfield Association, and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.
Allambie Heights is bounded to the south by Manly Dam Reserve, which is also referred to as War Memorial Reserve. This reserve serves as the natural environment for a variety of plant and animal species. The region is also home to a variety of rock carvings created by Australian Aboriginal people, with the collection located in Gumbooya Reserve serving as one of the more impressive examples. The Garigal National Park can be found on the western boundary.
Allambie Heights is bounded to the north by Allenby Park, which features a few secluded pockets of tropical rainforest and is cut through with a network of minor creeks and waterfalls.
In recent years, bushfires have consumed a significant portion of the bushland area; nevertheless, this is a natural part of the ecological cycle in Australia, and the woods are able to regrow in a rather short amount of time.
