Artarmon is a suburb located on the lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 9 kilometres to the north-west of the central business district of Sydney and falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Willoughby for purposes of local government.
In 1794 and 1796, land grants were distributed to emancipists and soldiers in an effort to boost agriculture. William Gore (1765–1845), who served as the provost-marshal under William Bligh, Governor of New South Wales, held the most important property in the region. In the year 1810, Gore was awarded a land grant of 150 acres (0.61 km2), which he named Artarmon after the estate that his family owned in Ireland. Gore Hill was given its name in his honour.
Thomas Rowe, an architect who would later serve as Mayor of Manly, was responsible for the design of the Chatswood South Uniting Church, which was constructed in 1871. The church can be found at the intersection of Mowbray Road and the Pacific Highway. It is a church built out of sandstone in the Gothic style, and it has a modest belfry that is situated on the eastern front of the edifice. A modest cemetery can be found just to the west of the location, and its earliest graves date back to the year 1871. The structure was enlarged in 1883 and again in 1930, and it is now included in the Register of the National Estate, which is no longer in operation. The Pioneer’s Memorial Reserve is the name given to the cemetery by the National Trust, which maintains the listing for the cemetery.
On December 1, 1909, the Artarmon Post Office first opened its doors.
The areas of Artarmon that are residential, business, and industrial are all mixed together. The area to the west of the railway line is occupied by high-rise structures, while the area to the east is made up of dwellings. Despite the fact that it still has the atmosphere of a suburban neighbourhood, the area south of the Gore Hill Freeway is classified as an industrial district. On the western side of the train station, you’ll find a lengthy stretch of stores along Hampden Road, while on the eastern side of the station, you’ll find a number of eateries along Wilkes Avenue. One of the branch libraries that make up the Willoughby Public Library System is the Artarmon Public Library.
The North Shore & Western Line of the Sydney Trains network includes the Artarmon railway station as one of its stops. At Artarmon, the Gore Hill Freeway and the Pacific Highway connect with one another. St. Leonards and the Artarmon Industrial Area will now have access to a free shuttle service thanks to the efforts of the Willoughby Council. From the Pacific Highway, you may get a bus into the Central Business District of Sydney.
