Austral is a suburb of Sydney in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located 42 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district, within the City of Liverpool’s local government area.

It is bordered by the waterway Kemps Creek to the west, a Sydney Water supply channel to the east, a straight division to the north, and Bringelly Road to the south. Bonds Creek flows southeast to northwest through the suburb and joins Kemps Creek near 15th Avenue. It is notable for its layout, with streets laid out in a grid and all horizontal streets named “Avenue” in ascending order from south to north.

The Austral Banking and Land Proprietary acquired a parcel of land in West Hoxton that now comprises the suburbs of Austral. When residents in the Hoxton Park area pushed for a second public school in 1891, Austral Banking and Land Proprietary donated 3 acres (12,000 m2) of its land for the site, and in exchange, the school was named Austral Public School. Although it wasn’t officially recognised until 1972, the school’s name became synonymous with the neighbourhood. Austral Post Office was established on February 7, 1894.

Austral has a sports field, youth centre, tennis court, and skate ramp at Craik Park, a pavilion at W V Scott Memorial Park, and a bowling green at Petanque. It is home to a Rural Fire Service station, a primary school (Austral Primary), two retirement villages (RSL LifeCare Tobruk Village and Scalabrini Village), a nursing home (John Edmondson VC Gardens), and a small commercial area with a post office and telephone. It is the location of Camp Austral and a small shopping district near the intersection of Fifteenth Avenue and Edmonson Avenue. In addition, a Sikh temple and an animal shelter are located there.

Bringelly Road connects Austral to Liverpool and the Westlink M7, a toll road that provides relatively quick access to Sydney Central Business District and the remainder of Greater Sydney.
Bringelly is connected to Liverpool via Rossmore, Austral, Hoxton Park, and Cartwright via the Route 853/855 bus service. In 2015, a train station was inaugurated in the nearby suburb of Leppington.
