In the Australian state of New South Wales, Balgowlah is a neighbourhood located in the city of northern Sydney. Within the Northern Beaches region and under the jurisdiction of the Northern Beaches Council’s local government area, the suburb of Balgowlah can be found 12 kilometres to the north-east of the Sydney central business district. The neighbouring areas of Manly Vale, Balgowlah Heights, and North Balgowlah are all included in the same postcode as Balgowlah, which is 2093.

In 1832, the area was given the name Balgowlah, which comes from an Aboriginal word that means “north harbour,” in reference to its location in relation to Port Jackson. During the early stages of European colonisation, the area was commonly referred to as Little Manly. Whitehall was the name of the residence on White Street that served as the official residence of Australia’s first Prime Minister, Sir Edmund Barton. The Norwegian Seamen’s Church has been in Whitehall since the year 2004, when it first opened its doors.

The intersection of Condamine Street and Sydney Road makes up the bulk of Balgowlah’s primary commercial district. Harvey Norman and Bunnings Warehouse are two of the most important enterprises in the Balgowlah area. On Condamine Street is where you’ll find the shopping centre known as Stockland Balgowlah. On July 15, 2009, the centre first opened its doors. Coles and Fitness First, along with 62 other retailers, make up its primary majors. Stockland Balgowlah was constructed on top of the historically significant Totem Centre, which first opened its doors in 1959. The North American model served as the inspiration for the name Totem.

The shopping centre featured 33 different stores, in addition to a bowling alley and a large Woolworths department store. The Totem Centre was in a state of disrepair at the time of its demolition in 2007, and the Totem moniker was not continued after the building was razed in 2007. Despite this, the centre is still sometimes referred to as “Totem” by people in the surrounding area. Westfield Warringah Mall, which is located two kilometres to the north of the suburb, is the major retail centre that is the closest.

In Balgowlah, there are a few more compact shopping districts, some of which are the sole surviving examples of the classic “corner shop” that existed before to the 1960s.
One of the stops that the free Hop-Skip-Jump bus service makes along its route is in Balgowlah. This service is provided by the Northern Beaches Council. In addition, there are a great number of public buses that run in the region, the vast majority of which pass through Balgowlah on their way to Manly, Warringah Mall, Seaforth, and the city.
