Minto is a Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. Minto is 38 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district, in the City of Campbelltown’s local government area, and is part of the Macarthur region.
Minto was named after Earl of Minto Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, Viceroy of India from 1807 to 1814. The term was given to the entire territory that stretched from just north of Appin up to what is now Denham Court.
The Tharawal people originally lived in the area that is now Minto until the advent of British settlers from the First Fleet. In 1811, Governor Lachlan Macquarie donated William Redfern, the colony’s first surgeon, 800 acres (3.2 km2) in the region. Campbellfield was named after Macquarie’s wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name was Campbell. The land was utilised by Redfern as a vineyard and sheep ranch.
Dr Robert Towson erected his sandstock mansion, Varroville, on property provided by Governor Macquarie in 1810. Charles Sturt and James Raymond, the first Postmaster General, later owned the mansion. Colonel Parker erected Epping Forest, a Georgian bungalow on Raby Road, in the 1820s. Around 1830, Robin Hood Farm was erected on Campbelltown Road. These three homes are now on the National Estate Register.
A railway station was erected in the area in 1874 and named Campbellfield for the land, but this caused confusion with neighbouring Campbelltown, so it was renamed Minto in 1882. Soon after, the region began to develop, and by the 1950s, it had grown to a population of roughly 500 people.
In 1969, the Dwellings Commission purchased a huge plot of land on the east side of Minto in order to create low-cost housing. Soon after, a huge industrial estate was built in the vicinity, completing Minto’s transformation from village to Sydney suburb.
The Airport & South Line on the Sydney Trains network serves Minto railway station. Minto also has a tiny inland port that is connected to Port Botany via rail. The inland port is made up of a single rail siding with an adjacent hard stand surface for containers, and it is operated by top and tailtrains with engines at both ends.
