Monterey is a suburb in southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, located 15 kilometres south of Sydney’s central business district and is a part of the St George area. The Bayside Council administers the municipal government of Monterey.
Monterey resides on the western borders of Botany Bay. Lady Robinsons Beach and Cook Park flank the eastern boundary. Along the western boundary is Scarborough Park, which includes a pond. On Chuter Avenue, close to the intersection with Scarborough Street, there is a small collection of shops.
The 1987 music video for Mental As Anything’s single “He’s just no good to you” was shot on Scarborough Street in Monterey.

Monterey was a part of Brighton-Le-Sands and Ramsgate at one time. As the neighbourhood expanded, Californian-influenced street names like as Hollywood, Monterey, Pasadena, and Culver were picked. On Chuter Avenue, near Monterey Street, a modest collection of shops was constructed. When the Monterey post office first opened, it was known by that name. The Rockdale Council desired to establish a new suburb, but not everyone agreed with the proposed name, since some believed it was too American, particularly in light of the existing street names. 1972 saw the official designation of Monterey as a suburb, as the majority of residents were in favour.

Pat Moore’s Swamp or Patmore Swamp previously comprised a portion of Scarborough Park. It was named by the Honorable Thomas Holt after Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a seaside English town.
