Mount Victoria is a small settlement in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia (postcode: 2786). It is the most westerly village in the City of Blue Mountains, located around 120 kilometres by car from Sydney’s core business district and at an elevation of approximately 1,051 metres AHD. At the time of the 2011 Census, the population of the town was 823.

Mount Victoria is situated on an escarpment plateau extension of Mount York, which was the location of a camp in 1813 on the original Blaxland, Wentworth, and Lawsoncrossing routes in the Blue Mountains. Sir Thomas Mitchell, the Surveyor General at the time, first labelled the region as One Tree Hill on an early map from 1834. This is why the municipality was named One Tree Hill when it was created in 1866.

After the construction of the route across the Blue Mountains, a toll bar was established in 1849 around 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) east of the current settlement; the region was also known as Broughton’s Waterhole Toll Bar. Coaches were taxed at the toll based on how well-sprung they were; those without springs were exempt, as it was considered they would contribute to the road’s deterioration.

In 1869, following the opening of the railway station at the terminus of the Main Western railway line, the town’s name was changed to Mount Victoria. The town’s name was officially changed in 1876, when the first post office was constructed.

By the late 19th century, the town had become a thriving community, and numerous private institutions, including The School, Mount Victoria, had been established in the region, which had become a sort of hill station hideaway for wealthy Sydney families.
