Mount Wilson is both a mountain and a hamlet in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. The settlement is located approximately 100 kilometres west of Sydney and 14 kilometres east of Bell. At the time of the 2006 census, Mount Wilson was home to 218 people.

The Mount Wilson region was mapped by Edward Wyndham in 1868. It was later named after John Bowie Wilson, the then-Secretary for Lands in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. In the second half of the 19th century, the new township gained popularity as a summer hideaway for the wealthy. Taking advantage of the rich volcanic soils, expansive gardens were built around the buildings. St. George’s Church was constructed by the children of Henry Marcus Clark and consecrated in 1916; and the mansion Withycombe in The Avenue was constructed by George Henry Cox, the grandson of William Cox, who constructed the first route across the Blue Mountains.

The novelist Patrick White spent a portion of his boyhood there and wrote about it in his 1981 memoir Flaws in the Glass; his parents resided in Mount Wilson from 1912 to 1937. In Flaws in the Glass, he referred to a nearby rock formation as “one of those monotonous Australian tourist attractions called Chinaman’s Hat.”
