The region began to see permanent settlement between the years 1794 and 1800. The place was given the name “Mulgrave Place” by Lieutenant-Governor Grose in honour of Constantine Phipps, who had been the second Baron Mulgrave and had passed away in 1792. Joseph Banks counted Baron Mulgrave as both a colleague and a close friend during his time as a naval commander and statesman in England.

The T1 North Shore & Western line as well as the T5 Cumberland line both stop at the Mulgrave railway station. It is a total of four stops away from the Richmond station, which serves as the terminal. The distance between Mulgrave station and Sydney’s Central Station is 53 kilometres (33 miles), and travelling there by rail during peak travel times takes around 1 hour and 6 minutes. The Seekers at Home is a television special that aired in 1968 and covers the station along with the arrival of a steam train. Shortly after being used in a music video for the song “Angeline is always Friday,” steam hauled services were discontinued. The video was used to set the scene.
