North Sydney is a Sydney, Australia, neighbourhood and important district located on the Lower North Shore. North Sydney is situated three kilometres north of Sydney’s central business district and serves as the administrative hub for the North Sydney Council local government region.
The commercial district of North Sydney contains the second-largest concentration of office buildings in New South Wales,[citation needed] with a significant presence from the advertising and information technology sectors. Advertising, marketing enterprises, and other crafts such as printing have traditionally dominated the area’s business community, but they have been somewhat overtaken by information technology companies. The following corporations have offices in North Sydney: Cisco Systems, Vocus Communications, NBN Co, Novell, Sun Microsystems, AGL, Hyundai, AAMI, Sophos, Symantec, Nando’s, Vodafone NAB, and until October 2007, Optus.
In contrast to other major suburban centres in the Sydney metropolitan area, North Sydney has few shopping facilities and almost no Sunday business. Four supermarkets are available (Aldi, IGA , Coles and Woolworths Metro). The principal shopping centre is Greenwood Plaza, which is connected to North Sydney station. Previously known as North Sydney Shopping World, Berry Square is a shopping centre located on Berry Street.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge provides direct car and rail access between North Sydney and the Sydney Central Business District. North Sydney railway station is on the North Shore & Western Line of the Sydney Trains network. Blue Street is densely served by bus services provided by State Transit, which connect rail and bus services to North Sydney’s neighbouring areas as well as train services to Richmond via the T1 North Shore and Northern Lines’ City station. The Warringah Freeway connects North Sydney south to the Sydney CBD and north to Chatswood, New South Wales. The High Street, North Sydney wharf is a stop on the Neutral Bay ferry service, which is part of the Sydney Ferries system. By way of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it is possible to walk from North Sydney to the city centre in under thirty minutes.
