Northwood is a suburb located on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, eight kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district and within the Municipality of Lane Cove. Northwood is located between Woodford Bay and Gore Creek on the northern bank of the Lane Cove River.

Mrs. Jane Davy constructed Northwood House, which was planned by Edmund Blacket (1817-1883) and constructed in 1878. The name was chosen since it accurately describes the place, a northern wooded area. Mrs. Davy also constructed a ferry at her own expense so that her family could go by ferry to the city. For the early history of Northwood, read John and Pam Ball’s 2016 Riverview book, Exploring the early history of Northwood.

St. Leonards is the closest train station, and there are frequent bus services in the neighbourhood. Northwood ferry pier gives access to the Captain Cook Cruises Lane Cove River ferry service, which is popular among workers who take the boat to Circular Quay to commute to the CBD.

Before his death in 1988, landscape artist Lloyd Rees resided for many years in Northwood. Numerous of his later works depict the region.
Australian painter William Edwin Pidgeon, often known as Bill Pidgeon and WEP, lived in Northwood between 1909 and 1981. He received the Archibald Prize in 1958, 1961, and 1968.
