Oatley is a southern Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It lies 18 kilometres south of Sydney’s central business district and is part of the St. George region. Georges River Council is the local government authority for Oatley. It is located on the northern bank of the Georges River’s tidal estuary, and its coastline includes a portion of Oatley Bay, Neverfail Bay, Gungah Bay, Jewfish Bay, and Lime Kiln Bay.

Originally, the railway ran east of the current Mortdale Railway Sheds and down the western side of Oatley Avenue, where the Oatley Memorial Gardens are now located. The initial station platform was placed at the western end of Frederick Street and extended north to the parking lot of the Oatley Hotel. In 1905, the railroad was rerouted, and the new station opened. The electrification of the passenger network began in 1926 with the introduction of the first suburban electric service between Sydney’s Central Station and the suburb of Oatley, located around 20 kilometres south of Sydney.

Oatley is the final stop on the Sydney Trains Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line before crossing the Georges River to Como in the Sutherland Shire. The 955 bus route provides service from Mortdale to Hurstville via Oatley West and Oatley.

The primary shopping district is located near the train station at Oatley Avenue and Frederick Street. On Mulga Road is a tiny collection of stores and a Coles Supermarket known as the Oatley West shops. In Jewfish Point, a third set of shops near the intersection of Baker Street and Landsdown Parade has been turned primarily to non-retail enterprises. Oatley is frequently cited as the most charming shopping village in the St. George region due to its village feel, fine cafes, and vast parklands located in the centre of the shopping district near to the train station.
