Located 56 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district, in the City of Penrith’s local government area, lies the Sydney suburb of Orchard Hills, New South Wales, Australia. Location: in Western Sydney proper.

Originating at the turn of the twentieth century, when the area’s undulating hills were home to several orchards, Orchard Hills has become known for its fruit. Mary Putland, the future governor’s daughter, received 600 acres from Philip King in 1806 in the area now known as Orchard Hills. She decided to call the estate “Frogmore.”

Two-story Georgian mansion erected on the current site of Mamre Road in the 1830s by Reverend Samuel Marsden. Its sandstone architecture and historical significance have earned it preservation status. It’s been renovated into a banquet hall and may be visited by taking a guided tour.

The York Estate was adjacent to the Frogmore Estate and was formerly owned by the York family. Land was sold for orchards and vineyards after subdivision in the late 1880s. A little settlement had formed there by the turn of the twentieth century.

In 1904 came the construction of the Mount Hope Methodist Church, and in 1910 came the construction of the York Estate Public School. Prior to this, locals sporadically referred to the region as “Frogmore,” “York,” and “Mount Hope,” none of which stuck. Orchard Hills was chosen at a public gathering held in the new school in October 1910.

The suburb of Orchard Hills, New South Wales, Australia, is right in the heart of Penrith. The southern border is formed by the Sydney Water supply pipeline, and the eastern border is formed by St. Clair and Erskine Park. Glenmore Park, South Penrith, and the rural districts of Wallacia and Mulgoa form the western boundary, while to the north are the suburbs of Kingswood and Claremont Meadows. Orchard Hills is largely rural, with rolling hills and picturesque panoramas. Orchards and vineyards cover most of the area, with some house developments appearing in more recent decades.
