Peakhurst is a suburb in Southern Sydney, also called the St. George Area. It is 21 kilometres south of Sydney’s central business district. Georges River Council is in charge of running the area where Peakhurst is.

Salt Pan Creek, which flows into the Georges River, runs along the western edge of Peakhurst. Peakhurst Heights is a separate suburb in the south. It is between Boggywell Creek and Lime Kiln Bay on the Georges River. Some people who live in the area still think of Peakhurst Heights as being in “Peakhurst.”

Peakhurst got its name from John Robert Peake, a landowner who bought 10 acres of land in 1838 near where Forest Road and Henry Lawson Drive meet. In 1855, the Wesleyan Church was built on a piece of land that he gave.

The area was given to Captain John Townson in 1808 as part of a land grant. William Hebblewhite sold John Robert Peake his land in 1838. When the public school was built in 1871, School Inspector Huffer suggested that Peake’s name be used to name the neighbourhood. In 1885, the post office first opened.

The first business in the area was cutting down trees, because the forests around were full of different kinds of wood, especially turpentine. The wood was taken to Sydney by teams of bullocks. As the land was cleared of trees, orchardists came to work there.

Forest Road, Henry Lawson Drive, Stoney Creek Road, Boundary Road, Bonds Road, Broad Arrow Road, Isaac Street, and Baumans Road are the most important roads. Forest Road is the busiest road in Sydney. It connects to Henry Lawson Drive at Peakhurst and goes through a number of other suburbs.
