The Sydney inner-city suburb of Redfern is a component of the City of Sydney’s local government area and is three kilometers south of the city’s central business district. A community called Strawberry Hills shares a boundary with Surry Hills. In recent years, the neighborhood underwent gentrification.

The state government undertook extensive redevelopment projects in Redfern in order to boost the area’s population and lessen the concentration of poverty there and in nearby Waterloo.
