History
In the year 1788, the indigenous people of this region were known as the Darug.
In 1789, British colonists were the first to explore this region. They gave the nearby hill located to the west of the Hawkesbury River the name “Richmond Hill” during that time. The name was chosen by Governor Arthur Phillip in honour of Charles Lennox, the third Duke of Richmond, who served during the Pitt administration as Master General of Ordnance.
The name was given by Governor Arthur Phillip. After Sydney and Parramatta, the local area was the third place in Australia to be settled by Europeans. It came after the two larger cities. In 1794, a group of 22 European settlers became the area’s pioneers. They worked a total of 12 hectares (30 acres) of farmland in the area that is now known as Pitt Town Bottoms. They required fertile farmland to help them meet the overwhelming demand for food in the newly established colony. By 1799, this area was responsible for the production of approximately half of the grain that was grown throughout the colony.
The inhabitants of the Darug tribe and the British Marines engaged in combat throughout the months of May and June of 1795 at Richmond Hill.
Macquarie is credited with founding five settlements in the region around the year 1811, including Windsor, Richmond, Castlereagh, Wilberforce, and Pitt Town. James Blackman, an early colonist, constructed Bowman Cottage using brick nog, a common building method in the colony, and money borrowed from William Cox. Blackman used this method to build Bowman Cottage. Between the years 1815 and 1818, construction of the home took place. Due to the fact that James was unable to pay his debts, he was compelled to sell the land to George Bowman. The building was renovated by the New South Wales Public Works Department, and it is now used by a division of the Australian Foundation for the Disabled, which provides work opportunities for people with disabilities.
The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) maintained a top-secret operations bunker at Richmond during World War II. It was either partially or entirely buried underground. It is currently unknown where this bunker is located; however, it has been reported that this bunker was identical to the Bankstown Bunker, which is currently buried beneath a public park in Bankstown. The location of this bunker is currently unknown. There is also the possibility that this bunker could still be in one piece.
RAAF Base Richmond is a Royal Australian Air Force base that was established in 1923 and is located in the city of Richmond. At the moment, the transport squadrons of the RAAF are stationed here at the air base. The C-130 Hercules aircraft based out of RAF Richmond was responsible for providing logistical support and medical evacuations during the Vietnam War.
