Rookwood is a suburb in western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, located 17 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and within the Cumberland Council local government area.
The largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere is Rookwood Cemetery.
Rookwood was named after the title of a novel written by William Harrison Ainsworth in 1834. (1805–1882). On the railway route between Sydney and Parramatta, a station named Haslam’s Creek was opened in this region in 1859. In 1804, Samuel Haslam controlled different grants along the creek. Haslam’s Creek was the location of the first railway accident in New South Wales, which claimed two lives in July 1858.
When it opened in 1867, the cemetery was known as Haslam’s Creek Cemetery. Residents disliked the relationship with the cemetery, therefore in 1876 the name of the suburb was changed to Rookwood. In 1878, the station’s name was changed to Rookwood, and by the 1880s, stores had established in the vicinity. The Municipality of Rookwood was formed in 1891. (renamed Lidcombe in 1913).
Over time, the cemetery acquired the name Rookwood Cemetery. By 1898, residents were once again agitated about their suburb’s association with the cemetery. In 1914, the railway station and the residential portion of the suburb were renamed Lidcombe. Later, the Rookwood railway station, which served the Rookwood Cemetery, was situated between the Arthur Street bridge and the westernmost Flemington rail yard junction.
The Lidcombe Municipality merged with Auburn on January 1, 1949.
Prior to its closure in 1967, Rookwood railway station was on Sydney’s Main Suburban railway line. The Rookwood Cemetery Line once ran from Mortuary train station on Regent Street adjacent to Central railway station, but has since been discontinued.
The Cemetery railway line was inaugurated on October 22, 1864. At the time of its debut, the line reached Cemetery Station No. 1 only. On May 26, 1897, a line expansion to Cemetery Station No. 3 was inaugurated. The extension necessitated the elimination of a waiting room on the rear wall of Cemetery Station No. 1 in order for the line to pass directly through the structure. The last addition, Cemetery Station No. 4, was inaugurated on June 19, 1908. The last train ran in 1948.
