Rouse Hill is a Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. Rouse Hill is situated in the Greater Western Sydney Region, 43 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD and 19 kilometres north-west of the Parramatta CBD. It is located in The Hills Shire and City of Blacktown local government areas. The Rouse Hill Town Centre is located in the middle of the neighbourhood, which features a lively Town Square.

History
Rouse Hill comprises what was formerly known as the Village of Aberdour and what was formerly known as Vinegar Hill after the 1804 convict insurrection. The Rose Hill Packet, the first ferry service in the colony, provided service to Rouse Hill. The Vinegar Hill Post Office was established on October 1, 1857 and renamed Rouse Hill on April 13, 1858. The new name was chosen to honour the estate of renowned free settler Richard Rouse (1774-1852), who came in the colony in 1801. His first grant was awarded in 1802, and his second in 1816. Governor Lachlan Macquarie proposed naming the estate Rouse Hill.

Conflict at Vinegar Hill
Rouse Hill is significant in Australian history as the location of the decisive battle during the Castle Hill uprising or the second Battle of Vinegar Hill. On March 4, 1804, Irish convicts, including political prisoners imprisoned for their participation in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, escaped from the Government Farm at Castle Hill in an attempt to seize control of the region and capture Parramatta. The following day, the military forces quashed the insurrection with heavy casualties at Rouse Hill. Many of the rebellion’s participants were ruthlessly executed. The precise location of the Battle is unknown, however a monument with a plaque commemorating the event may be found at Castlebrook Lawn Cemetery, located on Windsor Road in Kellyville Ridge.

In 1859, the Rouse family posed in front of Rouse Hill House.

The primary article is Rouse Hill House

Richard Rouse constructed his Australian Georgian residence, Rouse Hill House, between 1813 and 1818. In 1863, service wings and a courtyard with arcades were constructed. The garden’s modest, geometric layout is likely the oldest still extant in Australia. The house, its near surviving estate, and outbuildings, including stables constructed by John Horbury Hunt, are presently maintained by Sydney Living Museums as a house museum, and are listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register and the old Register of the National Estate. Dolls, clothing, and the writings of the two Rouse sisters, Nina (1875-1968) and Kathleen Rouse, are among the preserved family relics (1878-1932). Inspiring Ursula Dubosarsky’s award-winning novel “Abyssinia,” these comprise a unique and intriguing record of late-Victorian Australian childhood.

Rouse Hill Church of England

Christ Church, located on Windsor Road, was constructed for the United Church of England and Ireland in 1863. (Warren et al. 2006). It served as a church, a school, and the hub of most community activities. In 2008, a Ministry and Education Centre was inaugurated beside the renovated Christ Church and the 1908-era hall. [13] In 1875, the school was moved from the church and established as Rouse Hill Public School at the intersection of Windsor Road and Annangrove Road.
