Sans Souci is a neighbourhood in the southern part of Sydney, in the Australian state of New South Wales. The Bayside Council and the Georges River Council both have jurisdiction over Sans Souci because it is located in both of their respective local government areas. Sans Souci is located 17 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district. It is included in the St. George metropolitan area.
The town of Sans Souci may be found on the western coast of Botany Bay. Cook Park and Lady Robinsons Beach can be found running parallel to the eastern boundary. Along the western boundary is where you’ll find Kogarah Bay. The Captain Cook Bridge crosses the Georges River and connects Sans Souci to Taren Point in the Sutherland Shire to the south. Taren Point is located to the south of Sans Souci.
The phrase “without care” or “no worries” comes from the French phrase “sans souci,” which literally translates to “without care.” Seven Mile Beach was the traditional name for the stretch of coastline that may be found between Cooks River and Georges River. In 1874, the name of the beach was changed to Lady Robinson’s Beach in honour of Lady Robinson, who was married to Governor Sir Hercules Robinson. Samuel Cook, a supporter of the park’s establishment as a recreational space open to the general public, is honoured with the naming of Cook Park.
In the year 1830, Catherine Cooper was awarded a grant of 100 acres (0.40 km2) in the region. It was on this land that she and her husband, Robert Cooper Junior, constructed their home. Later on, the Cooper family ran a distillery there, at which point the area was referred to first as Charlotte Point and then as Rocky Point.

The town of Sans Souci got its name from a grand house that was built on Rocky Point Road on land that was purchased in 1853 by Thomas Holt (1811–1888), who was a wool merchant and politician. The house was built for Holt’s German wife. The summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, which was located in Potsdam, Germany, inspired the naming of this place. Sanssouci. However, Holt believed that the location was too remote, so he built a second home in Marrickville with a view of the Cooks River and named it “The Warren.” This home is located in the region. On this land, he was known to breed rabbits for hunting purposes and to keep exotic animals, among them an alpaca. Despite the remote location of the Sans Souci property, William Rust was able to turn it into a successful hotel after purchasing it from Holt in the 1860s.
In the 1890s, a steam tram ran between Sans Souci and Kogarah, allowing residents of both locations to enjoy activities like as bathing, boating, and fishing. A noiseless electric trolley bus was first put into service in 1937 and ran between Rockdale and Kogarah, Sans Souci, and Dolls Point. This service continued until 1959.
