Scotland Island is an island and suburb located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches in the Australian state of New South Wales. Church Point, the primary mainland service location for Scotland Island, is located 32 kilometres north of Sydney’s central business district in the Northern Beaches Council local government region.

The island was discovered and explored for the first time by Europeans in 1788, shortly after the creation of the Sydney Cove penal colony. Arthur Phillip, the colony’s governor, first named the island Pitt Island in honour of William Pitt, the British prime minister of the time. Andrew Thompson was the first European settler to acquire land on Scotland Island, where he established a prosperous salt mill. He dubbed the island Scotland Island in honour of his native country. He manufactured boats on the island until 1810, when he passed away. Before being subdivided and sold in parcels in 1906, the island was sold as a whole numerous times in the nineteenth century. In the early 1900s, salt was harvested from seawater near the present-day Tennis Court Wharf. Each week, around 90 kg were removed using an oil burner.

In the 1960s, permanent residents began to settle on the island, and in 1967, the island received power. Historically, sheep farms were located on the island, but the bulk of workers now commute to the mainland.
Scotland Island is one of two populated islands in the Sydney metropolitan region, with 579 inhabitants as of the 2016 census. Private watercraft and the Church Point Ferry provide access to the island. The majority of the island is comprised of vegetation, with around 350 dwellings lining the surrounding coastline. There are no stores, restaurants, or industrial areas.

The non-residential structures include a preschool, a community centre, and a fire station. The Child Centre and Community Hall were constructed by the locals in the 1980s and 1990s for a variety of reasons. Among the island’s community groups are Island Thinking, which hosts regular discussion sessions, and a number of artists. In 2006, the community on the island organised an arts and cinema festival. A fire in an art gallery in neighbouring Newport damaged a collection of works from Scotland Island and Pittwater’s outlying villages’ residents.

Due to the lack of vehicle access to the island, the volunteer fire brigade performs a number of duties that would normally be provided by full-time emergency service personnel in other regions of Sydney. About 30 active (firefighting) members and another 30 associate (non-firefighting) members comprise the Scotland Island Rural Fire Brigade (SIRFB). (Reference needed) Scotland Island is a well-known centre for artists and musicians in Sydney. Notable inhabitants include Continental Rob Suzs of The Dynamic Hepnotics, a 1980s Sydney soul band, and blues and roots singer Jackie Marshall.
