Shalvey is a neighborhood of Blacktown in the Australian state of New South Wales. Shalvey, in the local government area of the City of Blacktown and a part of the Greater Western Sydney region, is situated 48 kilometers west of the Sydney CBD.
The Shalvey Shops is a modest shopping center in Shalvey. There is a grocery store, a pharmacy, a doctor, a butcher and takeout restaurants, as well as a BP service station with a fully functional mechanical workshop.
The area’s principal road, which was formerly a crown subdivisional route, gives Shalvey its name. The street bears Patrick Shalvey’s name (1866–1962), a wealthy landowner who operated an abattoir there to supply his butcher shops in the city.
Public housing managed by the NSW Department of Housing, constructed during the 1960s and 1970s, predominates in the housing market and is made up primarily of big terrace-style complexes. These are increasingly being transferred to private hands, and as this process continues, the government-built buildings are being replaced with privately constructed, contemporary dwellings that resemble those being constructed in other parts of Sydney.
