South Hurstville is a neighbourhood 18 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located in the St. George region. South Hurstville falls under the jurisdiction of the Georges River Council. Hurstville and Hurstville Grove are distinct adjacent suburbs.

Captain John Townson and his brother Robert Townson were granted the Hurstville area in 1808. Captain Townson was granted 1,950 acres (7.9 km2) of land that is now occupied by Hurstville and parts of Bexley, while Robert was granted the land that is now occupied by Penshurst, Mortdale, and parts of Peakhurst. The next year, Captain Townson was awarded an additional 1.0 km2 of land in what is now Kingsgrove and Beverly Hills. However, the Townson brothers were dissatisfied with the densely forested property they were given because it was unsuitable for sheep farming; hence, it is likely that they never occupied their land.

In 1812, the area was sold to rich trader Simeon Lord (1771–1818), who named his property Lord’s Bush. When Simeon Lord died, the land passed to John Rose Holden and James Holt of the New South Wales Bank.

In 1850, the area was sold to Michael Gannon (1800–1861) and was afterwards dubbed Gannon’s Forest. In 1881, the Gannon’s Forest post office opened. In 1876, the local school was given the name Hurstville by School Inspector MacIntyre. When the railroad arrived in 1884, the station adopted the school’s name, Hurstville. The city of Hurstville was formed in 1887.
