Suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Located in the City of Penrith, which is a part of Greater Western Sydney, South Penrith is 55 km from Sydney’s CBD.
Jamison Road forms the northern border, York Road the western, the M4 Motorway the southern, and the Northern Road the eastern boundary of South Penrith. A northern suburb with its own identity, Penrith is not part of the greater metropolitan area.
The Northern Road serves as the primary thoroughfare in the area, linking it to both Penrith and the M4 Western Motorway, which in turn gives easy access to the rest of Sydney and the Blue Mountains. There is a Sydney Trains station close by, and it is located at Penrith on the Western Line. The majority of South Penrith is serviced by Route 791, one of Westbus’s bus services, which travels directly between Penrith and the surrounding region; Route 793 travels between Southlands Shopping Centre and Racecourse Road and Penrith.
Penrith South Public School, York Public School, and Mary Mackillop Primary School are the three local elementary institutions. Jamison High School, home of the Jamison Highlanders, is the local public high school. 2005 Panther Trophy victorious team.
South Penrith is represented by Jim Aitken, Mark Davies, Karen McKeown, Kathryn Presdee, and Joshua Hoole on Penrith City Council. John Thain currently serves as mayor. It is a part of the Penrith Electoral District, which is overseen at the state level by Liberal MP Stuart Ayres. For federal purposes, it is included in the Lindsay Division, which is represented by Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh.
Traditions of Indigenous Peoples
The Mulgoa, a Darug-speaking people, inhabited the area now known as South Penrith before European arrival. They followed customary regulations that traced their origins to the Dreamtime and continued to control their hunter-gatherer way of existence. Bark houses (or “gunyahs”) were their commonplace dwellings. They subsisted mostly on natural flora and animals, hunting kangaroos and emus for food and gathering yams, berries, and other tubers.
Simeon Lord, a pioneer settler from Europe, was awarded a thousand acres of land in 1816. When Charles and James York purchased the estate at the end of the 19th century, it was renamed York’s Estate in their honour. To build a racetrack, the Penrith and Nepean Jockey Club bought 100 acres of the estate in 1888. There were also dairy farms, vineyards, and fruit orchards in the surrounding area. The region started being subdivided in the 1970s, albeit the old racetrack wasn’t converted into homes but instead became Jamison Park. Sir John Jamison (1776-1844) of RegentvilleHouse is the most well-known early pioneer in the Penrith area, thus he is honoured with a park bearing his name.
