It is situated 56 kilometres to the south-west of the Sydney central business district and falls under the jurisdiction of the City of Campbelltown’s local government. St. Helens Park was named after a Gothic palace that was constructed in the area in 1887 by George Charles Westgarth, an attorney in Sydney. Although it can be found at the southernmost point of St. Helens Park Drive, the mansion is not the oldest structure in the neighbourhood. The farm house known as Denfield and Curtilage can be found on Appin Road. It was constructed in the 1830s by John Farley, who is famous for his role in the Fisher’s Ghost story. By the 1940s, the land in St. Helens Park had been converted into a laboratory for the research and development of fly sprays, earning it the nick moniker “Blowfly Farm” among the neighbourhood. In later years, it was transformed into a residential and grazing property. The Campbelltown Council approved the area for suburban development in 1975, and the area was formally named St. Helens Park the following year in 1976. Even if progress was gradual at first, it has continued all the way through the 1980s, 1990s, and into the 21st century.
St. Helens Park had a total population of 6,136 residents as per the census completed in 2006. There was a somewhat larger than normal number of families (80%), and the median income for families was $1154 per week, which was slightly more than the average across the country. Although there were sizeable minority who spoke Spanish (2.2%), Lao (1.2%), and Arabic (1.0%), the bulk of residents were native-born Australians (72%) and spoke exclusively English (78%).
Appin Road provides an excellent road connection between St. Helens Park and both Campbelltown and Wollongong. In addition, Campbelltown’s own local bus company, Busabout, provides service to the area. It is serviced by two bus lines (887 and 888), one of which travels straight from St. Helens Park to Campbelltown, and the other of which travels along the route that travels from Campbelltown to Appin and Wollongong.
