Undercliffe is named for a sandstone outcrop. The 1840s land grant Undercliffe Estate had a home erected on it. First, sandstone was quarried between Wolli Creek and Cooks River. Some homes were built entirely of sandstone, while others used it for foundations. Retired East India Company Judge James Donnithorne (1773-1852) possessed stakes in the Undercliffe Estate, which he left to his reclusive daughter Eliza Emily (1826-1886). The land was later sold and subdivided. [Bibliography] Illawarra Road crossed the Cooks River on a timber bridge in 1836. Tompsons Bridge was named for Mr. P.A. Tompson’s father, who bought the Bexley estate from James Chandler. Floods repeatedly destroyed the bridge. Sydney Solicitor Frederick Wright Unwin built a bridge to access his property between Cooks River and Wolli Creek. Unwin obtained his land from Arthur Martin in 1840 and built Wanstead, after an Essex, England hamlet. Names of Unwins Bridge, Unwins Bridge Road, Wanstead Avenue, and Wanstead Avenue Reserve. Waterworth Park was declared unclean and unfit for habitation in 1906.
Between 1912 and 1957, electric trams ran along Illawarra Road and Homer Street in Undercliffe, west of Earlwood, to Marrickville and Newtown. Now buses provide service.
