In the Australian state of New South Wales, Villawood is located 25 kilometres to the west of the Sydney central business district. It is a part of the Greater Western Sydney region and belongs to the Canterbury-Bankstown Council and the City of Fairfield local government areas. A facility that is used for the processing of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants can be found in Villawood. This facility is known as the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.
In the past, members of the Gandangara Aboriginal tribe made their home in this region. The first settlers from Europe arrived in the early 1840s. The land that is now known as Villawood was farmed in the 1860s, but at the time it was plagued by packs of feral dogs. Woodville Road, which passes through Villawood, was formerly known as Dog Trap Road. This was due to the fact that many farmers used to set dog traps for wild dogs. Woodville Road was the original name of the train station that opened in 1922 to serve the community of Woodville. The unfortunate confusion with another place called Woodville in the Hunter Valley led to the name being transposed into “Villawood,” which was a misspelling of the original.
When it first opened, Villawood Place was a major shopping centre that served the communities in the surrounding area. Following the opening of the nearby Bass Hill Plaza, many businesses in Villawood went into decline, leaving behind a legacy of abandoned shop fronts and buildings. Among these is an abandoned Franklins supermarket as well as a large Australia Post office. Since then, Woodville (Villawood) Place has undergone revitalization and renovation thanks to the construction of a new Bunnings, an Aldi supermarket, a bakery, as well as chemists, grocery stores, and other shops. Its location is convenient for access to the Villawood railway station. In Villawood there is a business park that is home to companies that sell hardware products, furniture, auto parts, and second-hand goods. In the eastern part of Villawood is located an industrial area that is serviced by the Leightonfield railway station.
Vilawood is now home to a wide variety of establishments catering to the recreational and entertainment needs of young people, such as AMF Bowling, Wiggles World, M9 Laser Skirmish, Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym, and Kartatak go-karting. In addition, additional recreational and food-related attractions are in the works for the area. All of these establishments are a part of a larger complex known as The Woods Action Centre, which can be found on the northern side of the railroad line, directly across the street from the station, and on the other side of the road from the shopping centre that is directly across from the Villawood station exit. And if you’re looking for something quick to eat, Villawood has a KFC, McDonald’s, Hungry Jack’s, and Domino’s.
On the Sydney Trains network, the Bankstown Line includes both the Villawood railway station and the Leightonfield railway station.
