Waitara is a suburb of Upper North Shore Sydney in the Australian state of New South Wales, located 19 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district and within the Hornsby Shire local government area.

Waitara is a hub for all things automotive, including new and used automobile dealerships, auto repair shops, and maintenance facilities.

Blue Gum Hotel is the only hotel in Waitara. Since 1884, this location has housed a hotel, but two fires have destroyed the earlier structures. The existing structure dates back to 1962.

In addition, Asquith Rugby League Club and Millennium Health Club can be found in Waitara.

Edgeworth David Avenue’s Performing Arts Centre is run by the Police and Community Youth Clubs (the latter is named after the scientist Edgeworth David).

Myles McRae once had property in Southern Sydney, close to Hurstville. When he sold the property to a development firm, the manager used the name Waitara for the subdivision. McCrae subsequently acquired land near Hornsby, and when the railway station opened in 1895, he recommended the name Waitara, which was officially used.

The Waitara Post Office began operations on 1 October 1913 and closed in 1986. The Waitara East Post Office began operations on 1 June 1966 and closed in 1994.
