The Australian suburb of Wallacia is located in the state of New South Wales. Located in the current cities of Penrith and Liverpool, this once-rural community is 68 kilometres (42 miles) west of Sydney’s General Post Office (GPO). Geographically, it lies within the Metropolitan Region of Greater Western Sydney.

The area was originally known as Riverview, but it was renamed Wallace after a local cattle rancher named Robert Wallace. Wallace rented a plot of land totaling 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) from Sir Charles Nicholson 1st Bt. of Luddenham and used it to graze cattle. Beginning in November 1885, his home—behind what is now the Wallacia Store and Newsagents—served as the de facto post office for the area. In 1897, a new school was constructed and given the name Wallace School.

Since the name Wallace was already in use elsewhere in New South Wales, the General Post Office gave the place the name Boondah when it became official in November 1905. Locals were opposed to the idea and instead proposed keeping the name Wallacia to honour Wallace. The first official use of this name was on June 1, 1906. From Mulgoa, where Elizabeth Fowler née Holt held the PO Licence, John and Ethel Mary (née Murphy) Fowler and their family relocated on March 25, 1908. On April 1, 2008, the Fowler family commemorated 100 years of ownership of the Wallacia Post Office, which began when John Fowler accepted the licence on that date in 1908 [citation needed].

The Wallace Post Office first opened on January 16, 1891; it later changed names to Boondah and then Wallacia.

At “Grove Farm,” where a sandstone flour mill and adjacent brewery now stand, John Blaxland constructed the first wooden weir. George Edward Cox, a teetotaler who lived in Winbourne (now Christian Brothers Retreat Mt Zion) on the other side of the Nepean River in Mulgoa, purchased Grove Farm when rust infected the English soft wheat and rendered the flour mill there unusable. William “Billy” Baines later bought Grove Farm, therefore the name “Baines Hill” can be seen on Silverdale Road beyond the monoslope foothills of the Blue Mountains. Billy Baines placed a brass plaque on a sandstone block near the barn at Grove Farm to commemorate the highest recorded flood of the Nepean River in 1873. The block stands next to the water mark that remains on a wood trunk pillar.

In the 19th century, the area’s main industries were dairying and grazing, but by the early 20th century, with its rural setting and close proximity to Sydney, the area had become popular with tourists who opened their homes as guest houses. However, with the widespread adoption of automobiles and the advent of affordable airline travel, the post-war period saw a marked fall in the influx of foreign visitors. Bullen’s Animal World, an amusement park and circus, operated in Wallacia for decades.

Hobby farms built by city dwellers looking to escape have been a major contributor to the region’s population boom in recent years. A parade with floats, line dancing, and vintage trucks was held in the suburb in 2006 to commemorate its first hundred years of existence.
