Warrimoo (previously Karabah) is a medium-sized town located 273 metres above sea level in the lower Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. Blue Mountains is the state government’s electorate, and Labor’s Trisha Lee Doyle is the state representative.
Federally, the Macquarie electorate is represented by Labor’s Susan Templeman. Warrimoo is situated in the local government area of the City of Blue Mountains, 75 kilometres west of Sydney. Mark Greenhill, a Labor member, is the local council’s mayor. Warrimoo is located adjacent to the municipalities/suburbs of Blaxland, Mount Riverview, Sun Valley, and Valley Heights. The neighbourhood is five train stops from Penrith and eleven stops from Katoomba.
The Blue Mountains Line of the NSW TrainLink intercity network serves the Warrimoo train station. Uber and Blue Mountains Transit also provide bus service to Warrimoo. The first Warrimoo station, established in 1918, was destroyed by a blaze in the 1950s and subsequently rebuilt. The NSW Liberal government’s decision to purchase new South Korean-made trains has sparked controversy regarding Warrimoo’s train station, which may require renovations to handle trains up to 205 metres in length. In addition, the railroad tracks may require adjustment. The Western Sydney Airport is anticipated to open in 2026, with a train connection via Parramatta.
The Florabella Pass Track is a popular and picturesque nature trek from Warrimoo to Blaxland that traverses abundant vegetation, waterways, and unique species. The bush walk leads to a dense jungle loaded with rare species such as Lyrebirds, Flame Robins, Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, Gang Gang Cockatoos, and Owls. The Pippas Pass section of the trail is famed for its shelter caves and colourful flora, including flannel flowers, Waratah plants, and pink angophoras. The distance is less than 9 kilometres, but the terrain is difficult. There are numerous additional bushwalking trails. Due to their endangered status, the Wilderness Society and other environmental organisations encourage koala sightings to be reported.
Warrimoo is an Aboriginal word that means eagle’s nest or site where the white bird shrieks.
In 1898, a railway station platform named Karabah (Armenian for “great garden”) was constructed in the vicinity to service a burgeoning estate, presumably with the same name. It had closed prior to World War I, but in 1918 a replacement station named Warrimoo was constructed not far farther down the Blue Mountains line. Arthur Rickard, an entrepreneur and developer, was responsible for the creation of Warrimoo. In an effort to promote sustainable living, he intended to partition blocks such that there would be a variety of small blocks and larger blocks. Rickard urged residents of the Warrimoo Estate to cultivate fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and hens. Warrimoo retains numerous ancient residences and structures around the village, including a distillery (now the site of the local public school) and a former “Bordillo.” In his later years, charity worker and gospel singer George Ardill settled to Warrimoo. His address was 13 Florabella Road. During his time there, Ardill constructed multiple homes for homeless women and children along Florabella Street and The Avenue.
