The city of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, is home to the suburb of Werrington Downs. It is in the City of Penrith’s jurisdiction and is part of the Greater Western Sydney Region, 52 kilometres west of Sydney’s CBD.

Traditions of Indigenous Peoples
The Mulgoa, a Darug-speaking people, inhabited the area now known as Werrington Downs before European arrival. They followed customary rules with their roots in the Dreamtime, and their lifestyle was primarily nomadic hunting and gathering. Bark houses (or “gunyahs”) were their commonplace dwellings. They subsisted on yams, berries, and other natural vegetation, as well as meat from kangaroos and emus. Following the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet to Australia, a smallpox epidemic wiped off entire indigenous tribes, making it much simpler for Europeans to take their land.

Settlement in Europe
In 1831, Phillip Parker King, the son of Governor Phillip Gidley King, received the first of many land grants in the region. His sister Mary Lethbridge inherited the land, and it was farmed there until subdivision began in the 1880s. Once Landcom started constructing in the area in the 1970s, widespread residential development could finally begin. In 1976, the name of the suburb was officially recognised.
