In the Australian state of New South Wales, Wetherill Park is a neighbourhood that is located in Greater Western Sydney. Wetherill Park can be found in the City of Fairfield’s local government area, which is situated 34 kilometres to the west of the Sydney central business district.
Wetherill Park has a total resident population of 6,026 people according to the census completed in 2011. Just under half of these residents were born in Australia, making about 47.5% of the total population. The total landmass covers 11,2 kilometres squared. The majority of the suburb’s people live in the south-eastern quadrant, while the rest of it is primarily an industrial region.
Wetherill Park may be found on the southeastern edge of the Prospect Reservoir. The Smithfield-Wetherill Park Industrial Estate is the largest industrial estate in the southern hemisphere and serves as the centre of manufacturing and distribution in Greater Western Sydney. Part of the estate is located within the suburb itself.
The proprietor of the land that is now Wetherill Park was a successful businessman who donated 21 acres (85,000 m2) of his land to the state for use as a park. The offer was taken up, and thanks to the benefactor, the park now bears his name. The earliest residents of Wetherill Park built their homes to the north of where the school building currently stands. One hundred years ago, there were not enough people living in this suburban area for it to warrant the construction of a school.
A local storekeeper named Samuel Booth, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Prospect Reservoir Waterworks, left a portion of his property available for use as a school without charging any rent. The address of the school, which was known as “Macquarie Park,” was 365 Victoria Street, which is located in Wetherill Park. Daniel Street was one of the cross streets. It first opened its doors in May 1882 with a total enrollment of eight students, but in June of the same year, the name of the institution was altered to “Boothtown” to honour Samuel Booth’s contribution to the founding of the school. It first opened its doors as the Reservoir Public School in 1884, and then in 1896, it was renamed the Wetherill Park Public School. In order to make room for the Phuoc Hue Temple in 1986, the school was renamed William Stimson Public School, relocated down the road to Lily Street, and given a new name. This was done in honour of the first mayor of the City of Fairfield.
Wetherill Park is traversed in part by the T-Way bus route, which first began operation in 2003. In addition to that, the Westlink M7 Sydney Orbital motorway is situated in close proximity to the property. Wetherill Park is traversed by a significant thoroughfare known as the Horsley Drive. Polding Street and Victoria Street are two other examples of significant thoroughfares.
