Whalan is a suburb of Sydney in the Australian territory of New South Wales. Whalan, which is a component of the Greater Western Sydney region, is situated 44 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in the local government area of the City of Blacktown.

James Whalan, who received 300 acres (1.2 km2) at Mount Druitt from Governor Ralph Darling in 1831, gave his name to the community of Whalan. Sergeant Charles Whalan, who oversaw the Light Horse Guard and served as the orderly sergeant for Governor Lachlan Macquarie, was his father. James Whalan spotted the Grand Arch rock structure while pursuing the bushranger McKeown during his exploration of the region near Jenolan Caves and the Blue Mountains.

Four football fields and four soccer fields make up Whalan’s sizable reserve. Additionally, it includes a lot of parks and a sizable go-kart track that is open every Saturday. Along with it, the lush neighbourhood is home to a number of minor parks and reserves, including RAAF Park on its eastern edge. This park serves as a tribute to the RAAF camp that had stood here during World War 2. As the main road leading to Whalan Reserve, an airfield adjacent still had a runway in use. Prior to the NSW Housing Commission constructing the region in the middle of the 1960s, this runway as well as portions of Luxford Road and Kuringai Avenue were part of the old Mt. Druitt racetrack.

Three public schools are located in Whalan: Whalan Public, Madang Public, and Halinda Special Needs School. Shortly after the scandal involving the Daily Telegraph newspaper and Mt. Druitt High School HSC students who were incorrectly labelled as “failures,” Whalan High School was shut down (for which the newspaper apologised and settled out of court a class action brought by students and teachers). A number of local high schools were shut down and reorganised as Chifley College, which has campuses in the nearby towns of Dharruk, Shalvey, North St. Marys, and Bidwill. The grounds and buildings are presently used by Halinda and the PCYC headquarters.
