In the Australian state of New South Wales, the community of Woodbine is considered to be a suburb of the city of Sydney. It is located within the local government area of the City of Campbelltown and is a part of the Macarthur region. The distance from the central business district of Sydney is 55 kilometres to the south-west. The number 2560 is also the postcode for Campbelltown, which is adjacent to Woodbine.
Officially, the name Woodbine originates from a local cottage that served as the residence of a prominent local family known as the Paytens from the 1870s until the 1960s. Woodbine was originally a farm. On the hill that is now known as Payten Reserve, James Payten’s cottage used to be located. Rose Payten, his daughter, won the New South Wales Tennis Championship and is considered Campbelltown’s first sports hero. She held the title of Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles Champion of the New South Wales Triple Crown from 1901 to 1904 and again in 1907.
Rose Payten Drive is the name of the road that is named after her and it connects Woodbine and Leumeah. It has also been suggested that, during an argument about the name of the suburb in the Council, a disgruntled councillor suggested that it be named after the cigarettes that his chain-smoking colleagues smoked, and that it was from this off-the-cuff remark that serious consideration was given to the name Woodbine.
People who spoke the Tharawal language inhabited the region that is now known as Woodbine for more than 30,000 years. Rock engravings, cave paintings, axe grinding grooves, and shell middens are just some of the artefacts that remain on the ground as a testament to the people who formerly lived there. Kanbyugal Reserve is the name of a nearby park that was named after a Tharawal leader who had a meeting with the explorer George Caley in the region in the early 19th century.
At the beginning of the 19th century, people from Britain started moving into the area and settling there, where they established farms and orchards. Rose Payten passed away in 1951, and her quaint Woodbine home was torn down in the 1960s due to its advanced age. In the 1970s, property developers began considering the area around Campbelltown as a potential location for new developments in the rapidly growing city of Sydney. 1976 was the year that saw the first occupants move into the homes that had been constructed here by developers such as Landcom. The original plan was to honour John Kidd, a member of parliament for the area who served from 1877 until 2004, by naming the suburb Kiddlea. The concept was met with opposition from several of the councillors, and when the reference to Woodbine Cottage was brought up in council, the name was altered to Woodbine.
The beaches of Sydney inspired the naming of the streets in the Woodbine neighbourhood. The architects of the suburb got imaginative when they laid up the streets, and they ordered them geographically. The northern beaches of Sydney, including Terrigal, Patonga, Avoca, Long Reef, Mona Vale, and Manly, inspired the naming of North Woodbine, which is located in the city’s north. Cronulla, Elouera, Wanda, Bondi, and Coogee are just a few of the southern beaches that inspired the naming of the southern end. The municipality decided to build prestige houses in the area that is roughly in the middle of the suburb. The treeless ridge was transformed into a community forest in the 1980s and was given the name Kanbyugal Reserve, which was named after an Aboriginal warrior chief who was known to have roamed the area in the 1800s. The area in front of the forest that is known as Woodbine Ponds is neglected at the moment; however, the local administration has expressed interest in turning it into parkland in the future.
In 1981, Ettalong Place was the location of Australia’s first underground display home, which was constructed by Jewan Constructions.
Within a suburb of Sydney, Woodbine is home to one of the highest concentrations of dining establishments. Woodbine, which is located at the northern entrance to Campbelltown, has been the location of numerous quick-service restaurants such as McDonald’s and KFC for a good number of years. In addition, it is the site of an Oporto Restaurant, a Red Rooster, and a Hungry Jack’s. Family-friendly dining options in Sydney include the Sizzler, Outback Steakhouse, and Hooters, with the Sizzler and Hooters being two of only three of their kind in the entire city. Woodbine is the gateway to Campbelltown and the closest thing to a “America-town” in Sydney. It has been affectionately dubbed “cholesterol corner” due to the abundance of restaurants, as well as the adjacent Ibis Budget Hotel and Quest Apartments.
